Been to the Chicago location! Came to compare. The food is what we came fore - the kale Cesar, general Jane's chicken wings are *chefs kiss* as well as the burger and bologna sandwich (not picture since we scarfed them them). Service and servers were great attended to our needs in a timely fashion. The ambience is great in terms of the decor and the size of the space compared to the Chicago location however, the lack of air-conditioning was a major drawback.

I have always claimed that Au Cheval's double cheeseburger is the best burger I have ever had when I visited in Chicago, so I had to come to the New York one now that I live in the same city. They have a reservation system here, which makes it much easier than the Chicago location already without waiting for hours in line. The con is that they do charge you $2.50 for making a reservation that does not go to your bill or anything. Needless, I made a walk-in on a Sunday around 4pm and was seated right away, so just come at a less busy hour. When you arrive, you will walk down an alleyway to enter the restaurant, which seems a bit sketch. Once inside, the space is old school and classy. There's also a Sawada Coffee inside and a cozy lounge downstairs. To start off, I had the Mezcal Penicillin ($19.50), which was refreshing especially on a hot day. As for food, I know everyone comes here for the burger, but don't sleep on General Jane's Fried Chicken ($14.99 for half order). First of all, you can order a half order, which is perfect to share with two people. This comes with 3 pieces of fried chicken that is smothered in a sweet and spicy Korean sauce. The chicken is so crispy, so juicy, and so tasty being drenched in the sauce. It's reminiscent of Korean fried chicken, which I loved. It's a must-get appetizer before you get the famous Double Cheeseburger. Between the two of us, we shared the Double Cheeseburger ($22.99) with Bacon ($6.99) and Farm Egg ($2.99) and the Shaved Prime Rib Sandwich ($36.99). The burger was just as beautiful as I remembered --perfect from the juicy Wagyu Patty, melty cheese, thick bacon, and creamy egg. The egg makes it a bit messy, but it makes for the perfect picture. While the prime rib sandwich was great too, the burger is the must. The sandwich was good with the gravy, but this was a bit one noted and got boring after a few bites. Overall, still one of the best burgers ever. It's pricey, but worth trying at least once in your life. But also in love with General Jane's fried chicken here, so makes it worth coming for both of these dishes.

I'll tell you a little secret This place isn't hard to find. What's cool is the location and the transformation you experience when you walk in. There is a bar on the lower level, a swanky coffee shop right in the lobby and a beautiful dining area. We got seated right away w/o having reservations. Service was quick and prompt and the wait staff was very friendly. We ordered their famous burger, how can you not? I had the sliders and we shared fries. I didn't think there would be enough food for us both but we walked away w leftovers. Don't let the menu prices deter you. The food is really good! And why not spoil yourself the next time you are in Chinatown?

I had been to the Chicago Au Cheval many times and had never been disappointed. In fact, it is my favorite burger in the country. So I was very excited to try the New York one. It did not disappoint. Yum. It was so rich, flavorful, and delicious. I loved every bite. I got the double cheese burger with bacon and an egg. I got a side of fries and a Reissdorf Kolsh beer. Everything was perfect!! The bacon is thick and amazing. It's almost like eating pork belly. The egg was perfectly cooked to over-easy. Soft brioche bun. Pickles. I have dreams about this burger. So good. The fries were crispy and delicious and were served with a garlic aioli. Excellent beer selection. I loved the one I got!! The food is pricey, but worth it. The service is excellent. They really take pride in delivering an excellent culinary experience. The location was just ok. It was off Canal St. You have the people selling knockoff merchandise everywhere. And the entrance to the restaurant is down a dirty alley. It adds to the mystic of the place a little, but the alley was kinda creepy looking. Once you get inside that all goes away. It is nice inside. Much more space than the Chicago one. You don't have to have a reservation, but I highly recommend it so you are not waiting a real long time. I really enjoyed my food and the whole dining experience. I highly recommend and will definitely go back next time I'm in town. In addition, I visited the nearby Banksy Museum which I thought was pretty cool.

We were craving cheeseburgers and decided to check out Au Cheval. We've heard good things from friends. No reservation, but got good seats at the bar facing the kitchen. So impressed by the kitchen staff prepping food! + Kir-Yianni, Rosé 5/5: The most playful and fruity sparkling rose ever! I should've gotten a second glass because it's so good. + Prime rib sandwich 5/5: The bread had a crunchy exterior and soft interior from being gently toasted. I liked the melted gruyere on the shaved prime rib with horseradish drenched in au jus. Amazing! + Cheeseburger 5/5: I only took a bite of the burger but just that tiny bite is so packed with flavor! I wish they had a single cheeseburger only. Glad I got to try Au Cheval!

Finally, I had a chance to drop by to try out Au Cheval's double cheeseburger with an egg and bacon and it was heavenly! Absolutely fantastic cook and flavor that it makes it in the top 3 burger joints in the city! The thick cut bacon with egg took the burger to another level so don't skip out on this! Double Cheeseburger w egg and bacon - 5/5 Crispy Fries with Mornay Sauce- 4/5 - took a star away since the layer of fries at the bottom was drowned in the sauce making it too difficult to eat.

Walking down the alley way that houses the entrance to Au Cheval had me feeling like I was in a 50's Noir movie. Where my Fedora and 3 piece suit at? My big bro and I entered without a reservation, but with an extremely positive attitude, which is arguably more important. We were seated in a corner pocket at the bar after about 20 minutes. We were both hangry, so ordered the fried chicken ($30) to start, but really came for the "Best burger in NYC" claims. The fried chicken was solid, but was a little too sauced up for me. It was essentially drowning in that viscous sauce. The double cheeseburger starts at $23, but it costs $7 for bacon, and $3 for an egg. Oh does it come with a side of fries? Nah, that's an extra $13 thanks though. So all in, we are at $46 before tax and tip for a burger and some fries. That's NASTY work, even for NYC lol. I may as well get some steak frites at that price... So in fairness to what follows, my expectations were pretty damn high and at this point we all know that expectations are the root of all heartache. The burger arrived and the presentation is second to none, I can't even lie. A brioche bun under 2 patties with American Cheese topped with thick cut bacon on one side of the plate, and a bun under a sunny side up egg with the yolk ready to drip everywhere on the other side of the plate. It is pretty elite, but then came the taste test. Best burger in NYC? No way. It's just not that guy. I'd say probably an 8.25/10 burger. Pretty damn good, but worth the $46 and all the hype? Nah. Especially since the fries were just eh. Solid, but nothing to get inspired about. You never hear anyone talk about Au Cheval fries... Its player comp would have to be Kristaps Porzingis. Is it a key piece to a championship team? Absolutely. Is it a perennial all star and top 15 in jersey sales? Nah. You not Dirk Nowitzki baby!!! I haven't tried all the best burger spots yet, still trying to get to 4 Charles and Red Hook Tavern, but as of now, Virginia's in the East Village is my favorite burger I've had in the city. I will concede it's also expensive, but it's worth the max deal... especially with those shoestring fries. Contrary to everything I just said, it kills me to only give it 4 stars, but at $46 before tax and tip for a burger and fries I want to feel like I am ascending into heaven upon every bite. Had walked by many times and had wanted to try Au Cheval but it was difficult to get a reservation that worked. Finally managed to go for an early dinner and it was awesome! We had a great start with the Crispy Fries with Mornay Sauce and Kale Caesar Salad - both excellent. For our mains we had to try the Shaved Prime Rib Sandwich and the Double Cheeseburger and both lived up to our high expectations. For sides we had the Thick Cut Bacon and the Mac & Cheese which were also very good and the Chocolate Cream Pie provided a really nice finish. The place was energetic and our server Emily was terrific - helpful and friendly. Hope to be back! (If we can get a reservation )
